MLB injury updates: Rays place Alex Cobb on the 15-day disabled list
Hishashi Iwakuma and Denard Span are working their way back to the field, and Mat Latos is dealing with a setback.

Tampa Bay placed Cobb on the 15-day disabled list with a strain in his left oblique, according to the Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin. He suffered the injury near the end of seven shutout innings against the Reds on Saturday.
The 26-year-old right-hander will return to Florida to have an MRI that will determine the severity of the injury.
Tampa Bay is already short-handed due to the losses of Jeremy Hellickson and Matt Moore. Veteran Erik Bedard and prospects Nate Karns and Enny Romero could be called on to fill in.
Mat Latos shut down for 10 to 14 days
Latos, the Reds’ ace, was supposed to have returned to Cincinnati’s rotation already after undergoing microscopic knee surgery during spring training. However, a sore elbow has caused the team to hold Latos’ rehab program back., and now, according to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman, he has a flexor mass strain in his right forearm.
There was some concern that the elbow soreness could be evidence of a UCL injury, which would require Tommy John surgery. Latos has avoided that outcome, but he will be shut down for around another two weeks. His return to the Reds rotation has not been determined.
Hisashi Iwakuma throws 45-pitch bullpen session
Iwakuma threw his second bullpen session since February this week, Seattle News Tribune’s Bob Dutton reports, and will resume throwing his split-finger fastball on Tuesday in Texas. Iwakuma was diagnosed with a strained tendon in the middle finger of his pitching hand before spring training. He said he was “almost there” in regard to his rehabilitation. The next step is throwing the splitter off of a mound. If that goes well, he could pitch simulated game this weekend.
Denard Span hopes to return Monday
The Nationals center fielder was placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list after colliding with Braves second baseman Dan Uggla. According to James Wagner of the Washington Post, Span is feeling better and hopes to take batting practice on Monday. The Nats have been using Bryce Harper in center and free agent signing Nate McLouth in right field.
