Brewers vs. Pirates score update: Brawl breaks out after Carlos Gomez triple

Gomez flipped his bat after what he thought was a home run. After sliding into third, he was approached by Pirates pitcher Gerrit Cole and things got ugly.

Carlos Gomez was ejected from the Brewers-Pirates game on Sunday after a brawl broke out following a verbal exchange with Pirates starter Gerrit Cole.

Pirates outfielder Travis Snider was ejected as well. He's the guy in the black sweatshirt who knocks down Gomez.

Gomez nearly hit a home run to dead center field. Just after making contact, Gomez flipped his bat and strutted down the first base line. Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen made a leaping attempt to catch the ball, but he couldn't glove it. Gomez began sprinting around the bases and dove into third.

Pirates third baseman Josh Harrison fielded the throw into the infield and Cole backed him up. As Harrison handed the ball back to his pitcher, words were exchanged, and apparently, Gomez didn't like those words. He exploded and the benches cleared.

After the main dust-up was sorted out, Pittsburgh catcher Russell Martin -- and Gomez -- went through the typical post-fight "hold me back" necessities and the umpires took to figuring out who to eject. They settled on Gomez, Snider, and Brewers bench couch Jerry Narron. Martin Maldonado got a visible jab in as the players scuffled down the third base line. He was not ejected.

Play resumed with Cole still on the mound. He later singled to lead off the bottom of the third, but the Pirates failed to bring him around to score. Neil Walker homered in the bottom of the fourth to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
