Angels vs. Tigers recap: Three errors on one play lead to key run in 2-1 Detroit win

Hector Santiago and Rick Porcello put together strong starts, but the game was ultimately decided by one bad play.

The Angels and Tigers wrapped up their three-game set today with Hector Santiago and Rick Porcello on the hill. The teams split the first two games of the series and, on Sunday, played a tightly contested contest that had a somewhat embarrassing definitive moment.

Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera walked on the play, so Kinsler wouldn't have been out at second either way, but catcher Hank Conger threw the ball into center field in attempt to pick off the Tigers second baseman. Mike Trout fielded the ball and overthrew the cutoff man, then Santiago attempted to throw Kinsler out at home only to miss wide and allow the run to score and Cabrera to take second base.

Howie Kendrick singled in the only L.A. run during the top of the first, and Detroit scored on an RBI single by Nick Castellanos in the sixth. Santiago pitched well, allowing just two hits and no earned runs through 5⅔ innings with five walks and seven strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Kendrick remains hot these days. He has 10 hits in his last three games with two homers and five runs batted in.

Porcello held the Angels to one earned run on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts in seven innings.

Andrew Romine -- who took over for the recently released Alex Gonzalez -- had two hits and two stolen bases in the game, and Joe Nathan came in and closed out the game with Detroit winning 2-1.
