Ike Davis hits a broken-bat grand slam

It’s only his third game, but Ike Davis is already doing spectacular things in a Pirates uniform.

Vincent Pugliese

It only took three days in a Pirates uniform for Ike Davis to do something remarkable.

The much-maligned former Met hit a broken-bat grand slam off Reds pitcher Mike Leake on Monday night, turning a 2-0 deficit for the Pirates into a 4-2 advantage with one swing of his broken bat.

Even more spectacular, this is the second grand slam that Davis has hit this season after he hit a pinch-hit grand slam for the Mets back on April 5. Davis has settled in nicely so far as a Pirate, smacking five hits in his first 11 at-bats with Pittsburgh, including a double and Monday's grand slam.

The prospect of Davis turning into a reliable hitter for the Pirates isn’t entirely far-fetched, especially if one harkens back to the 32-home run season the first baseman had with the Mets in 2012 and looks past Davis’ bumpy 2013 campaign.

In any event, the Pirates are set to use Davis in a platoon with Gaby Sanchez at first base, a role that might just end up suiting the 27-year-old. Throughout his career, Davis has performed much better against right-handed pitching, batting .257/.358/.471 against righties in his career.

Last season, Davis hit .222/.356/.371 versus right-handers.
