Yasiel Puig injury: Dodgers outfielder day-to day with strained thumb ligament

Puig’s injury isn’t serious, but the reemergence of Matt Kemp could cause the Dodgers to bring him back slowly.

Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig was not in the lineup Sunday night against the Giants. He had an MRI on his left thumb after X-rays came back negative. The team has listed Puig as day-to-day with a strained ligament, according to Eric Stephen of True Blue LA.

Puig, 23, worked his way back into the lineup after being benched by manager Don Mattingly for showing up late to the team’s pre-game activities for their home opener.

If he ends up on the disabled list for a more significant amount of time this season, the Dodgers outfield depth should allow them to absorb the loss better than most teams could. Not only do they have Matt Kemp, Carl Crawford, and Andre Ethier ready to go everyday in the majors, but they also have one of the best young outfielders in the minor leagues.

Joc Pederson could see time in the majors this year if more than one of the Dodgers injury prone outfielders hits the disabled list.

Puig’s propensity for injuries is the result of his raucous style of play. He could end up getting bumps and bruises like this several time over the course of the season. Pairing that with the delicate relationship between himself and Mattingly, Puig might see less playing time than many expected he would this season.
