Fears that Reds first baseman Joey Votto may have suffered a serious knee injury were averted, but it does appear the former NL MVP will be missing a little time with a left quad strain, reports Mark Sheldon of MLB.com.
Joey Votto MRI shows left quad strain
Joey Votto’s MRI shows a strained quad, not a knee injury -- much to the relief of his front office and teammates.

Based on what manager Bryan Price told reporters, the MRI came after several weeks of pain for Votto and was only done after he felt the pain was starting to affect his performance. The news was met with “a collective sigh of relief,” especially because “it means there’s a reason for the soreness and the fatigue in the leg,” according to Price.

It's unclear exactly how they'll be dealing with the injury -- though the current plan is to keep Votto off the DL -- but a decision should be coming at some point during the weekend. Price told reporters, "We'll collect as an organization after the game today and try to define the best course of either rehab or the best decision for Joey and the club." For the time being, Brayan Pena will be filling in for Votto at first base.
And while losing any player -- especially one of Votto’s quality -- is never ideal, his injury was never really a significant concern to begin with. “I don’t think the feeling initially was that it was going to be something that was chronic or long-term debilitating,” Price said. “It’s not anything serious, it looks like all the structural stuff in the knee is great, intact. That’s the positive at this point.”
