Arenado drove a pitch by Gavin Floyd off the left field wall to lead off the second inning, narrowly missing his seventh home run of the year. But Arenado settled for his 17th double, sliding headfirst into second base.
Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez challenged the safe call at second base, but the play was upheld after review. Arenado remained in the game and scored on a single by Jordan Pacheco, but then left the game in the bottom of the inning. Charlie Culberson took over at third base for Colorado.
The 23-year-old Arenado is one of baseball’s bright young stars. He won the National League Gold Glove Award at third base as a rookie in 2013, and is hitting .302/.330/.481 so far this year. Earlier in the season, he had a 28-game hitting streak, which was the longest in baseball this year and the longest in Rockies franchise history.
It is unknown how long Arenado will be out, but infielder Josh Rutledge was pulled from his game with Triple-A Colorado Springs upon news of Arenado's injury, per Tracy Ringolsby of MLB.com.
