Ben Revere hit his 1st career homer after 5 years

This is both exciting and disappointing.

Rich Schultz

Ben Revere did it, you guys! He finally hit a home run! The Phillies outfielder had gone 1,565 major-league plate appearances -- the longest stretch of anyone in baseball post-World War II -- without hitting a homer. He was well on his way to becoming a footnote before this swing changed history as we know it:

Revere has never even hit a homer in spring training, and only hit five total in over 1,700 minor-league plate appearances (the last coming in 2011). Since 2010, the year Revere debuted, 60 different pitchers have gone deep at least once, totaling 95 homers over 9,590 plate appearances: That’s a dinger every 101 plate appearances for people whose job is not even hitting, as opposed to Revere’s one every 1,566. If you gave Yovani Gallardo Ben Revere’s career plate appearances at his own current homer pace, Gallardo would have 40 more career long balls than Revere.

It was exactly the kind of home run you would expect Revere to hit: it traveled 357 feet -- that's pull power for Revere -- and Hit Tracker suggests it only would have left six of the 30 baseball parks. Even when he's out of character, he's Ben Revere.
