For the second time this season, Matt Cain will be retroactively placed on the 15-day disabled list -- though this time, with a strained right hamstring -- by the NL West-leading San Francisco Giants, according to SFGate.com.

Giants pitcher Matt Cain will be making his second appearance on the disabled list this season, though this time it’s a hamstring -- and not a ham sandwich -- that put him there.

With the retroactive designation, Cain will be available to start next Friday's game against the New York Mets. The injury isn't considered particularly serious, and manager Bruce Bochy tells the AP that if the Giants were in the middle of a playoff race, or later in the season, his ace would not miss the start.
The manager also told reporters that Cain was hoping to start, but the pitcher and the organization ultimately decided against it. “We’re going to take the safe route,” Bochy said. “He wanted to pitch, but at the same time he’s feeling a little something. It’s just not worth the risk.”

Earning his nickname “The Horse,” Cain has been extremely durable throughout his career, in spite of a recent spate of DL stints. Although he’s had three since last August, they are the only three of his career, and his most recent -- which occurred at the beginning of this month -- resulted from cutting a sandwich. Even last August’s stint, the first of his career, was caused by an errant line drive that struck him on the arm.
Incidentally, the man replacing Cain in his scheduled start against the Cardinals for Friday is the same man who did so that first time: Yusmeiro Petit. However, unlike last year, Petit is actually on the major league roster, so outfielder Jose Perez will be the player called up to the 25-man roster in Cain's stead, according to the Giants' Twitter feed.
