Second baseman Robinson Cano's recent hand contusion -- which cost him his second game in a row on Friday -- could not have occurred at a worse time for the Seattle Mariners, who are hovering around .500 and sitting five-and-a-half games back from the A's.
MLB Roundup: Robinson Cano misses 2nd straight game with hand injury, Giancarlo Stanton destroys ball
Robinson Cano misses his second straight game with a hand contusion and Miami’s Giancarlo Stanton sends another ball into low earth orbit.

According to ESPN, while manager Lloyd McClendon wouldn't confirm the extent of the injury -- or even which hand had the contusion -- he did say the five-time All Star was day-to-day. Much like Cano was during his time with the Yankees -- where he averaged 160 games per season the last eight years -- he has been extremely durable for the Mariners so far this season. Before Thursday's scratch against the Angels, he had played in all 52 games and done so while leading the team in batting average and on-base percentage.
That extremely skilled bat will be replaced in the lineup by Endy Chavez, who the team called up from Triple-A. Chaves is essentially swapping places with pitcher Brandon Maurer, who has been optioned to Tacoma. Also included in the carousel was Blake Beavan, who was moved to the 60-day DL with right shoulder tendinitis so Chavez could be added to the 40-man roster.
