Jimmy Rollins becomes Phillies all-time hits leader

Former NL MVP and three-time All-Star shortstop Jimmy Rollins has broken the Phillies record for career hits with the team, surpassing Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt with the 2,235th of his career.

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Philadelphia Phillies shortstop and former National League MVP Jimmy Rollins added to his considerable resume with the 2,235th hit of his career on Friday, making him the all-time leader in Phillies history.

In his 2,014 career regular season games with the Phillies, Rollins has compiled a stat sheet that puts him in the pantheon of Philadelphia sports figures, including the man whom he surpassed for the record, Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt. Rollins also has the most doubles in Phillies history, and is in the top three in extra-base hits (782), total bases (3,540), games (2,015), at-bats (8,331), steals (436), runs (1,281), and triples (109).

Rollins was joined on the field by his teammates and Schmidt after he broke the record against Edwin Jackson in the bottom of the fifth inning against the Cubs. His teammates -- both current and former -- were equally as excited after the game, taking to social media to congratulate the four-time Gold Glove winner.
