MLB injury news: Mike Trout and Josh Hamilton to return Tuesday, Juan Lagares and Mike Carp headed to DL

The returns of Mike Trout and Josh Hamilton will give the Angels a boost, Juan Lagares and Mike Carp are placed on the DL, and Tigers prospect Robbie Ray will miss his next start with a blister.

Having missed two straight games over the weekend, Angels outfielder Mike Trout is expected to be back in the club's lineup as they begin a series against the Astros on Tuesday, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.

Trout missed the Angels’ final two games against the A’s on Saturday and Sunday with upper back stiffness, but he did indicate that his back felt better after missing Sunday’s contest. The 22-year-old outfielder, briefly slumped at the beginning of May but has producing at a high level once again since, and is now batting .294/.380/.549 with 11 home runs this season.

The Angels will also get Josh Hamilton back in the lineup Tuesday, as the slugger is set to be activated from the DL before the Angels take on the Astros. Hamilton has been out since April 9 with a torn ligament in his left thumb.

Although he only played in eight games, Hamilton got off to a hot start before landing on the DL, showing better plate discipline than in seasons past. Adding Trout and Hamilton back into the lineup will surely be a boost for an Angels team that finds itself in contention even after dropping three straight to division rivals Oakland this weekend.

Mets sending Lagares back to DL

Mets center fielder Juan Lagares is going back on the DL with a strained rib cage, according to ESPN New York's Adam Rubin. Lagares had an MRI in Manhattan and was diagnosed with an intercostal strain on Monday after leaving Sunday's game against the Phillies early.

The 25-year-old has been a valuable player for the Mets when healthy this season, though he previously landed on the DL with a strained hamstring. In 42 games, Lagares has hit .288/.331/.423 with 15 extra-base hits, while continuing to impress with his defense in center field.

The Mets called up Matt den Dekker to take Lagares’ place on the roster.

Carp is latest player to land on DL for Red Sox

Red Sox players have gone through a number of injuries in recent weeks, and now first baseman/outfielder Mike Carp is headed to the 15-day DL. A CT scan Sunday confirmed that Carp suffered a broken foot when he was hit by a pitch last week against the Braves, according to the Providence Journal's Brian MacPherson.

Carp is the latest Red Sox player placed on the DL after Mike Napoli, Shane Victorino, Will Middlebrooks and Ryan Lavarnway have all landed on the shelf in recent weeks. The absence of any first baseman on their roster forced Boston to play Brock Holt at first on Monday, though Napoli is expected back before the end of the week.

Tigers prospect Ray will miss start with blister

Tigers pitching prospect Robbie Ray left his Triple-A start in the fifth inning Sunday, but John Wagner of the Toledo Blade confirmed the injury was only a blister on Ray's hand. Ray is expected to miss his scheduled Friday start, though he should return to full health after that.

The left-hander has a 2.45 ERA in 36.2 Triple-A innings this season, striking out 29 and walking 10. He has also made four appearances, three of them starts, for the Tigers in 2014, posting a 4.70 ERA with nine strikeouts and six walks in 15.1 innings pitched.
