David Ortiz apologizes for outburst at official scorer

After drawing the ire of Joe Torre, Ortiz apologized on Monday for his outburst at an official scorer last Wednesday.

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz apologized for his outburst at an official scorer last Wednesday, admitting he was frustrated about a scoring decision that saw a ground ball he hit off Joe Mauer's glove initially ruled an error.

Ortiz was immediately frustrated when the play was announced an error, even giving a thumbs down signal towards the press box where the official scorer sits at Fenway Park following the ruling.

After the game, Ortiz complained, “I thought people were supposed to have your back at home, and it never happens. It’s always like that. I’ve been here for more than a decade, and the scorekeepers here are always horrible.”

Ortiz’s comments drew the ire of MLB executive Joe Torre, who rebuked him saying, “Official scorers have a job to do, and by their very nature, their decisions don’t make everyone happy. But everyone in our game deserves respect. I hope that David will meet that standard going forward, because I don’t share the same views that he expressed.”

Torre’s words led to an apology from Ortiz on Monday, who specifically expressed remorse to Torre and the official scorer, Bob Ellis. The official ruling on the play was also changed to a hit Monday afternoon.

Ortiz is batting .248/.349/.474 with 17 home runs this season for the Red Sox and leads the club in home runs, extra-base hits and slugging percentage.

It has not been made public whether Ortiz was fined for the incident, although it appears that all parties are ready to move on following the slugger’s apology on Monday.
