Jordan Lyles has been quite the pleasant surprise in Colorado this season, but the Rockies may have to survive without him for a while. Lyles broke his non-pitching (left) hand in a 16-8 loss to the Diamondbacks on Wednesday night on a play at the plate.

The right-hander suffered an injury to his non-pitching hand in a play at the plate on Wednesday.

With two outs in the first inning, a wild pitch squirted away from catcher Wilin Rosario and Martin Prado broke for home, with Lyles covering. Lyles applied the tag, but not in time as Prado was ruled safe on his slide, and the pitcher came up hurting.
The right-hander actually stayed in the game to pitch four innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits, with three strikeouts.
Manager Walt Weiss said after the game that Lyles “would be out a bit,” meaning a likely disabled list stint, per Nick Groke of the Denver Post.
“I never felt that feeling before,” Lyles said, per Groke. “I didn’t want to come out in the first and make the bullpen go a full nine. Thankfully we got four innings.”
Lyles on the season is 5-1 with a 3.52 ERA in 12 starts in his first season in Colorado, with 49 strikeouts and 26 walks in 69 innings.
The Rockies placed outfielder Carlos Gonzalez on the disabled list earlier Wednesday, and announced earlier in the week they would call up Eddie Butler to join the starting rotation and make his major league debut against the Dodgers on Friday. Butler was originally slated to take the rotation slot of Franklin Morales, who pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Lyles on Wednesday.
