The Twins signed free agent designated hitter Kendrys Morales this weekend in order to bolster their lagging offense, which ranks below average just over two months into the season. You would think it would take some time for a player who spent spring training waiting by the phone to get back into the swing of things, but hey, you'd be wrong: Morales is batting sixth and starting at DH for the Twins on Monday night.
Kendrys Morales is already in the Twins’ lineup
Well, that was fast.

Twins’ beat writer and BBWAA president LaVelle E. Neal III pointed out that the Twins had initially said Morales would need to get into game shape. He also added an odd thought to the end of that tweet:
After saying he needed time to get in game shape, Twins changed their minds...or intentionally lied
— LaVelle E. Neal III (@LaVelleNeal) June 9, 2014 I’m not sure what benefit there would be to lying about their intentions with Morales, but the real key point there is that the Twins changed their minds and we don’t know why. Maybe Morales showed up and hit a bunch of dingers and ran a lap at the same time that manager Ron Gardenhire was quietly sobbing about the possibility of writing Eduardo Nunez’s name in at DH again. Maybe Minnesota realized It’s already June 9 and they’re somewhat inexplicably in the middle of the wild card race during what should have been a rebuilding year, so they might as well get the most out of their shiny new toy from the start, even if it takes him a few days and major-league at-bats to get going.
Or I don’t know, maybe they were lying because they were bored and wanted to mess up everybody’s stories today. Either way, Morales will play professional baseball for the first time since 2013 ended, and he’ll do it in a Twins’ uniform Monday night.

Update: It’s even simpler than that. Now I’m even more confused about the lying thing.
Kendry Morales DHing for Twins tonight. No minor-league assignment, like Drew. The difference? Drew had an option; Morales was out
