Orioles catcher Matt Wieters to visit Dr. James Andrews

The Baltimore backstop will visit with Dr. James Andrews next Monday after progress on his rehab from an elbow injury has been slow.

Orioles catcher Matt Wieters will meet with Dr. James Andrews next Monday as he continues to recover from a strain in his throwing elbow, according to MLB.com's Brittany Ghiroli.

Wieters hasn’t had any setbacks while rehabbing the elbow strain, but his progress hasn’t gone as quickly or smoothly as he and the Orioles were hoping.

“[The meeting with Andrews] wasn’t, per se, scheduled,” Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said Monday, “but I think it’s something that Matt would like to do just to make sure that he agrees with where he is and the way we’re proceeding.”

Wieters landed on the DL on May 11 as rumors circulated that the 28-year-old catcher was headed for season-ending Tommy John surgery. The Orioles chose to rest and rehab the injury instead, hoping Wieters would be able to recover and return around July 1 this season.

Baltimore held Wieters out of action until May 30 before the Georgia Tech product began throwing every other day in an attempt to work his way back from the injury. Wieters will continue throwing every other day until he meets with Andrews next Monday.

“What they come out of that appointment with, put it this way, I hope I see him [next] Tuesday,” Showalter said.

Wieters was batting .308/.339/.500 with five home runs in 26 games before the injury. The six-year veteran has been Baltimore’s main backstop since debuting back in 2009 and he hit .235/.287/.417 with 22 home runs in 2013.

With Wieters on the DL, the Orioles have turned to Steve Clevenger and Caleb Joseph at catcher and also traded for Nick Hundley on May 24. None of those three has performed well in Wieters' absence, and Baltimore will hope to hear good news following his appointment with Andrews next Monday.

If Wieters were to opt for Tommy John surgery after meeting with Andrews, he would be ready for Opening Day in 2015.
