Jose Abreu continued his monster rookie season on Saturday, belting his AL-leading 29th home run off Indians pitcher Zach McAllister in the fourth inning to break up a scoreless tie.

With his 29 home runs, Abreu was an easy pick for the 85th MLB All-Star game, and he would have likely been a starter if he didn’t play the same position as Miguel Cabrera. But, if he keeps hitting like this, Cabrera may end up being his reserve sooner rather than later. “He’s good,” his manager Robin Ventura told ESPN, “I’m glad he’s on our side.”
And that would have been the understatement of the night if not for opposing manager Terry Francona’s entry in the contest, when he told reporters, “Abreu is obviously a very dangerous hitter.”
Brewers lose seventh straight
The Brewers have seen their sizable lead in the NL Central shrink to zero with seven straight losses, capped off Saturday with a 10-2 home loss to their division rival -- and now co-NL Central leaders -- the St. Louis Cardinals.
While Cards ace Adam Wainwright wasn't exactly dominant, his seven innings and four strikeouts were more than enough to get his team the win. That likely would have been the case even if his counterpart Jimmy Nelson didn't get shelled for eight runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.
The game marks the third consecutive one in which the Brewers have given up seven or more runs, and one of five times in the current losing streak where they were unable to score more than two runs. This downturn has pushed their playoff chances below fifty percent .
Maronde sent to Tribe
Just two days after being designated for assignment by the Angels, the organization has sent left-handed pitcher Nick Maronde to the Cleveland Indians for cash considerations. Maronde, who has been used exclusively as a situational reliever, has pitched abysmally this season -- nine earned runs on 12 hits in just 6 1/3 innings for a 12.79 ERA -- but at 24 still has a long future ahead of him, which will now be in Cleveland.
