Mike Trout named MVP of 2014 All-Star Game

The Angels outfielder tripled, doubled and drove in two runs to win MVP honors in Minnesota.

It was Derek Jeter's night at the 2014 All-Star Game in Target Field in Minnesota, but a player who grew up idolizing him took home the game's top honor. Angels outfielder Mike Trout was named the All-Star Game MVP on Tuesday night, leading the American League to a 5-3 win over the National League.

Trout was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. He drove in Jeter with a triple off Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright in the first inning, and drove in the go-ahead run with a double off Pat Neshek in the fifth inning.

Trout, who grew up a Yankees fan in New Jersey, is the fourth Angels player to be named All-Star MVP, and the first since Garret Anderson in 2003. Other Halos so honored were also outfielders -- Leon Wagner in 1962 and Fred Lynn in 1983.

Jeter nearly took home the MVP honors himself. The retiring Yankees shortstop and captain was 2-for-2 on the night with a double and a run scored, and received a pair of long standing ovations -- one before his first at-bat and another once he was removed from the game on defense in the fourth inning.
