Tom Glavine inducted into the Hall of Fame

Another member of the Braves dynasty has been inducted, following Greg Maddux and manager Bobby Cox.

Tom Glavine, the ace left hander from the Atlanta Braves' dynasty of the 1990s and the New York Mets later in his career, has been officially inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Commissioner Bud Selig and Hall curator Jane Forbes Clark announced Glavine, who had already been mentioned by the first two inductees of the day, former teammate Greg Maddux and former manager Bobby Cox. Glavine's longtime pitching coach, Leo Mazzone, was interviewed in the video that introduced him.

Glavine, who won 305 games from 1987 to 2008, began his speech reminiscing about his childhood, noting that he started out throwing snowballs at a painted square on his house.

He went on to thank Cox and Maddux, saying he was honored to be joining them in Cooperstown. He noted the greatness of the entire 2014 class: “All of you represent what is great about baseball. With your competitiveness it is no surprise that you’d be here.”

He also thanked Maddux for being his teammate and helping him win "all that money from Smoltzie [John Smoltz] on the golf course." But he also made a point to praise his former teammate waiting to be voted in. "Our good friend Smoltz had better be here next year."

Glavine mentioned Cox’s positivity after he had a poor outing -- a rare occurrence -- saying, “What game were you watching and how did I not win?”

He also remembered his decision to play baseball over hockey. “I was drafted ahead of two HOFs, Luke Robitaille and Brett Hull. I would have been a HOF in hockey, too.”

Glavine thanked his parents -- who were in attendance.

“Not to embarrass the name on the back. I wanted to represent my parents and my community,” he said.

He also thanked his wife and family, his coaches, doctors, fans, team owners, teammates, and fans -- specifically the Mets and Braves organizations, saying “Atlanta is my home now.”
