Troy Tulowitzki has ‘dry needle’ procedure on hip in hopes for mid-August return

The Rockies’ All-Star shortstop shouldn’t be out of action for too much longer after receiving treatment on his hip flexor injury.

Colorado Rockies star Troy Tulowitzki hopes he can return to action in a few weeks after undergoing a "dry-needling" procedure on Monday to promote faster healing in his left hip, according to MLB.com's Thomas Harding.

Tulowitzki has been out since July 18 with a hip flexor injury but will resume “movement activities” -- including walking and jogging -- on Wednesday. Assuming all goes well, baseball activities could soon follow, putting the four-time All-Star in line for a mid-August return.

The injury all but ensures Tulowitzki will fail to eclipse 140 games in a season for the third consecutive year. It also likely means he won't be dealt at the trade deadline, although Rockies owner Dick Monfort has maintained all along that he is against trading the two-time Gold Glove winner despite heavy interest from the Yankees, Mets and Cardinals. The offseason, of course, could be a different story, particularly if Tulowitzki asks for a trade, which he has yet to do.

Prior to getting hurt, the 29-year-old was having a monster season, hitting .340/.432/.603 with 21 home runs while playing his usual brand of well-above-average defense.

The Rockies, who were a National League-worst 42-63 entering Tuesday, were getting good production out of Tulowitzki's backup, Josh Rutledge, before he contracted an upper respiratory infection that knocked him out of the team's first two games of a four-game set against the Cubs. Rutledge is 13-for-34 at the plate in Tulowitzki's absence and is hitting .307/.358/.486 on the season.
