The Major League Baseball Players Association has opened an investigation into whether a number of agencies -- including ACES and CAA Sports -- played a role in the Biogenesis scandal that led to numerous suspensions in 2013, according to ESPN’s T.J. Quinn. Quinn’s sources say MLBPA has retained Washington, D.C. attorney Robert Muse, a veteran investigator, to run the investigation, and that Muse expects to release a report within the next several weeks. MLBPA declined comment to Quinn and Muse did not return requests for comment.
MLBPA investigating ACES, CAA for alleged PED ties
The baseball players union retained a Washington attorney to see if there were links between the Biogenesis clinic and several big-name player agencies.

Two key agencies being eyed, CAA and ACES, are among of the more powerful in baseball. CAA, located in Los Angeles, represented Ryan Braun, served a 65-game PED-related suspension. ACES, run by Seth and Sam Levinson, had four of its clients suspended in connection to the MLB’s Biogenesis investigation, including then-Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz, then-Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta, Mariners catcher Jesus Montero and Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera. Ten ACES clients in all were named in MLB’s 2013 report.
The suspensions came after Miami-based Biogenesis founder Tony Bosch agreed to testify to the MLB about his clinic’s role in doping in exchange for certain legal protections from the league.
Seth Levinson of ACES responded with an exclusive statement to SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo Thursday evening:
”Biogenesis has been thoroughly investigated and there is no evidence of any wrongdoing on our part. In August of last year, Michael Weiner, the Executive Director of the MLBPA put it best, when he said that “despite all of the new evidence none of it linked Sam or Seth (or their assistants) in any way to any of the use of PEDs.” We prefer not to revisit the past.
As a reminder, all of the players who were involved in Biogenesis were interviewed and to a man, said that we knew nothing and had nothing to do with the mistakes they made. Michael Weiner stated that “from our perspective, there is no evidence Sam and Seth have been involved in anything directly. No one said “Sam and Seth set me up. Sam and Seth knew what was going on.’ Michael Weiner added that all of the players who accepted their suspensions ‘were all tied to Nunez.’”
