MLB scores: Jeff Samardzija excels in Oakland debut

News, scores and miscellany from around the league.

Ezra Shaw

Jeff Samardzija might not be able to pitch in the All-Star Game, but he's probably okay with that. The A's newest starter picked up his first career win in the American League on Sunday, scattering four hits over seven innings and striking out five in a 4-1 win over Toronto.

Despite being voted into the All-Star Game, Samardzija is not eligible to appear in the game since he was voted in for the National League team, but pitching for the MLB-best Athletics is an obvious improvement over pitching for a rebuilding Cubs team at the bottom of the standings.

Roogie of the year ... sorry

It’s even more confusing when you find out his brother’s name ... it’s also Rougned Odor.

Seems justifiably bold

Mays, Clemente and Aaron for the National League in ‘66 might be hard to top, but that’s a pretty good group too.

Sunday’s scores

Nationals 2, Cubs 1

Athletics 4, Blue Jays 2
