Troy Tulowitzki to have hip surgery, out for season

Tulowitzki is expected to have the procedure on Friday in Colorado.

Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will have season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip on Friday, per Thomas Harding of MLB.com. The surgery will be performed in Vail, Colo., by orthopedic surgeon Marc Philippon.

Rockies trainer Keith Dugger said the expected recovery time after surgery for Tulowitzki is five months, per Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post.

Tulowitzki, 29, was putting up MVP-caliber numbers for the Rockies in 2014, hitting .340/.432/.603 with 21 home runs in 91 games. The four-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner led all National Leaguers in All-Star voting this season, starting his third midsummer classic.

He currently leads the NL in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, OPS and OPS+ (173), but has been on the disabled list since July 20.

Since Tulowitzki last played, Rockies shortstops are hitting a combined .210/.255/.340 with one home run in 23 games.

Injuries have always plagued Tulowitzki, who has been on the disabled list seven times in the last eight seasons. Since the beginning of 2008, Tulowitzki has averaged 112 games played per season, including only two seasons playing more than 126 games.

Tulowitzki still has six years and a guaranteed $118 million remaining after this season on a contract extension he signed with the Rockies in November 2010, plus a club option for 2021.

The Rockies (46-74) have lost 17 of their last 23 games since Tulowitzki went on the DL, and are on pace to lose 100 games for the first time in franchise history.
