One of the best young hitters in baseball will be out for a while, as the Diamondbacks placed first baseman Paul Goldschmidt on the 15-day disabled list with a broken hand on Saturday.
Paul Goldschmidt on DL with broken hand
The Diamondbacks first baseman will be out for at least 15 days, and possibly more, after a pitch hit his left hand and left it broken.

Goldschmidt, who is leading the majors in doubles with 39 and made his first All-Star start this year at the age of 26, suffered the injury after being hit by an errant pitch in the ninth inning of Arizona's game against the Pirates. Pittsburgh pitcher Ernesto Frieri tried to make it clear that he was not intending to hit Goldschmidt and also apologized to him through the media after the game, according to Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The former Angels closer went on to tell reporters that he was instructed by the Pirates to pitch inside following his acquisition from Los Angeles:
Frieri said he lived on the outside part of the plate with #Angels. #Pirates told him to pitch inside more. He thinks it has helped.
— Bill Brink (@BrinkPG) August 2, 2014 Alfredo Marte, an outfielder, was called up from Triple A-Reno to replace Goldschmidt on the roster, but it remains unclear who will be replacing him in the field at this time.
