Manny Machado reportedly will have knee surgery, out for season

Baltimore suffers a major blow to its World Series hopes, and Manny Machado looks like he’ll miss the rest of 2014 with knee surgery.

The anxiety surrounding Orioles' All-Star third baseman Manny Machado's return from a sprained right knee he suffered on Aug. 11 has turned into a terrible case of deja vu for Baltimore. Machado's season will end early due knee surgery for the second consecutive year, according to Yahoo's Tim Brown, and confirmed by Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com.

Last year’s injury, which occurred when he badly twisted his left knee and dislocated it running out a grounder to first, initially appeared horrific only to end up simply terrible, allowing him to start his season in May.

It appears that this year's injury may be worse. While it remains unclear whether he's torn the ligament -- it was initially reported to be a sprain -- he's definitely lost for the rest of the year. Chris Davis will continue filling in for him at the hot corner, but the O's will miss the 22-year-old's Gold Glove defense as October approaches just as much as his bat.

Machado will also reportedly have a small abnormality in his right knee -- which also exists in his left knee -- fixed during surgery, per Brown.
