Jesus Montero threw ice cream sandwich at scout while wielding bat

Nobody looks good in this situation.

Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

Mariners first baseman and designated hitter Jesus Montero reportedly had an interesting night in Boise on Thursday night.

Montero is on the disabled list with Triple-A Tacoma with a strained oblique, having last played for the Rainiers on Aug. 14. He was in Boise on Thursday on a rehab assignment with the Class-A Everett AquaSox. Montero wasn’t even playing, but reports had him active in other ways.

First from Keith Law of ESPN:

It should be noted that Montero didn’t play for the AquaSox on Thursday, nor was he listed in the box score as having been ejected.

Steve Mims, an Oregon beat writer for the Register-Guard in Eugene, added some more detail to Montero’s reported actions.

Whatever happened, the Mariners are aware of it, and they aren’t saying much. Per Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times:

MILB.com reports that the scout is not entirely innocent in this affair, either:

Montero was coaching first base, and at the end of an inning, the unidentified cross-checker yelled at him to hustle off the field... the cross-checker then ordered an ice cream sandwich and had it sent to Montero in the dugout, escalating the confrontation further. The official said Montero -- who arrived at Mariners Spring Training 40 pounds overweight this season -- approached the stands with a bat while screaming profanities and threw the sandwich at the cross-checker.

Montero, 24, has spent most of his 2014 in Triple-A. In six games with the Mariners this year, he is 4-for-17 (.235) with a home run. With the Rainiers he hit .286/.350/.489 with 16 home runs and 24 doubles in 97 games.
