Pedro Alvarez has stress reaction in left foot, likely out for season

Alvarez injured the foot on Aug. 26 and was limited to just one pinch-hitting appearance in 12 games since.

Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Pedro Alvarez will likely miss the remainder of the regular season after he was diagnosed with a stress reaction in the fourth metatarsal in his left foot, the team announced on Wednesday.

Typical recovery time for such an injury is four to six weeks.

Alvarez injured the foot on Aug. 26 against the Cardinals and has played in just one of 12 games since, striking out as a pinch hitter on Sept. 5.

“He’s not progressing the way he was before the pinch-hit at-bat,” Pirates general manager Neal Huntington told Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Tuesday. “And as a result, we need to kind of re-evaluate things and take a look at where we go from here.”

It has been a down season for Alvarez, who hit .233/.296/.473 with 100 RBI in 2013 and tied for the National League lead with 36 home runs. In 2014 he is hitting .231/.312/.405 with 18 home runs and 56 RBI in 122 games. Throwing problems cost him his everyday job at third base, with just seven starts at the position in the last 44 games.

Alvarez has been mostly a part-time player since the All-Star break, with five starts at first base and two more at designated hitter mixed in, but is hitting just .208/.250/.375 with three home runs in 29 games during that time.

The Pirates enter Wednesday night 1½ games up on both the Braves and Brewers for the second Wild Card spot in the National League.
