ALDS schedule 2014: Orioles to open in Baltimore against Tigers or Royals

The Orioles clinched the No. 2 seed in the American League and will open the 2014 American League Division Series at home in Baltimore with Chris Tillman on the mound against either the Detroit Tigers or Kansas City Royals.

The Baltimore Orioles won't finish with the best record in the American League -- they were assured of that on Friday when the Los Angeles Angels clinched the top spot in the circuit. Nevertheless, the AL East champions are locked in as the No. 2 seed and will open the ALDS at home in Baltimore against the winner of the AL Central.

The Detroit Tigers have a two-game lead over the Kansas City Royals with three games to play, and a magic number of two to clinch the division.

One of those teams will open against the Orioles at Camden yards in Baltimore on Thursday, Oct. 2, with the first two ALDS games in Baltimore.

Here is the ALDS schedule:

Game 1: Thursday, Oct. 2 in Baltimore
Game 2: Friday, Oct. 3 in Baltimore
Game 3: Sunday, Oct. 5 in Detroit or Kansas City
Game 4*: Monday, Oct. 6 in Detroit or Kansas City
Game 5*: Wednesday, Oct. 8 in Baltimore
*if necessary

The ALDS will be televised on TBS.

Chris Tillman will start Game 1 of the ALDS for the Orioles, manager Buck Showalter announced on Tuesday, with his Game 2 starter depending on matchups, per Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com. Tillman, an All-Star and 16-game winner in 2013, is 13-6 with a 3.34 ERA in 34 starts for Baltimore this season.

“He’s a pro,” Showalter said of TIllman, per Roch Kubatko of MASN. “He’s turned into a guy that I’m real proud of the way he goes about his business.”

The Orioles lost five of six games against the Tigers this season, including a sweep in three games at home, though the teams haven’t faced one another since April. Baltimore was 3-4 against the Royals this season and 2-2 in Kansas City.
