MLB releases 2015 regular season schedule

Major League Baseball released a preliminary version of its 2015 schedule.

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Erasing all doubts as to whether the game would go on without Derek Jeter, Major League Baseball on Monday announced its preliminary 2015-regular season schedule, which begins with a single game on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball on April 5. The traditional Opening Day will begin with 15 games lined up for Monday, April 6. The teams slated for the Sunday Night game have yet to be named.

Of note is the fact that baseball has done away with the staggered opening day and has instead opted to have all of its teams playing curtain-raisers on the same day.

As has been the case for the last two seasons, interleague play will be a daily feature of the schedule, with the first game coming on Opening Day with the Red Sox visiting the Phillies. Interleague play will feature the American League East playing National League East teams, the AL Central facing the NL Central and the AL West battling NL West foes.

Recent World Series rematches will be featured on several occasions, with the Giants and Rangers playing in Arlington, Texas, beginning July 31, the Yankees hosting the Phillies beginning June 22, and the Rays and Phillies battling in Philadelphia to settle a conflict that was already decided in favor of the latter six years prior, but you have to dress these things up somehow. That will begin on July 20.

The 2015 MLB Draft will begin on Monday, June 8. The 86th All-Star Game will be held on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati. Jackie Robinson Day will take place on Tuesday, April 15th.

The regular season ends on Sunday, Oct. 4, with 12 of the 15 games being divisional matchups.
