After years of seeing at least one of San Francisco, St. Louis or Los Angeles participating in the NLCS, the league is finally seeing two new teams face off as the Mets and Cubs start their series tonight. While both teams were seen as up-and-coming clubs before the season, no one saw both of them going this far, except that one guy. The good news is both teams are relatively healthy, but the Cubs will be missing Addison Russell for the entirety of the series.
The series will be getting underway at 8:07 p.m. ET, with Jon Lester going for the Cubs and Matt Harvey taking the hill for the Mets. Of course, the latter has been involved in a major innings limit story over the last few weeks, and despite throwing in the first game, there’s no guarantee he’ll throw in another game this series.
Regardless of whoever wins the series, there will be a fan base that hasn’t seen the World Series in quite some time. We all know the Cubs haven’t won a championship since 1908, but almost as amazingly, they haven’t even made the World Series since 1945. Meanwhile, the Mets have made it as recently as 2000, but they’ve been a tortured fan base ever since. Buckle up, because everything is setting up for this to be a phenomenal matchup.
- The ALCS started last night, and the Royals won on the back of a really nice outing from Edison Volquez.
- To make matters worse for the Blue Jays, Edwin Encarnacion left with a finger injury.
- There are now four potential World Series matchups, and who better to rank them than Grant Brisbee?
- What can other teams learn from the clubs still left in the playoffs?
- The Cardinals were knocked out earlier than they wanted to be, and now it’s time to plan their upcoming offseason.
- The same goes for the Dodgers, who have a particularly fascinating winter ahead.
- Texas had a surprisingly strong season, but they’ll still be making a few coaching changes before next year.
- I don’t know if you’ve heard this, but the Yankees are kinda old.
- Jose Iglesias is young, and he’s looking more and more like a legitimate major league regular for the Tigers.
- For some reason, the Astros are going to keep Tal’s Hill in center field, because what baseball needs is more on-field obstructions.
- The Nationals have a lot of free agents this offseason. Which ones will receive qualifying offers?
- Miami’s search for a new manager will delay their offseason plans and, in turn, their next fire sale.
- Adrian Beltre is not human.
