The Chicago Cubs are back in the National League Championship Series for the first time in 12 years, but they will need a win on Wednesday if it’s going to be anything more than a brief appearance. The Cubs dropped the first three games of the series to the New York Mets and face a win-or-go-home Game 4 in Chicago.

The Mets go for the sweep, while the Cubs try to force a Game 5.

Chicago hasn’t suffered any blowout losses on the way to an 0-3 deficit, but it hasn’t mustered enough offense in any of the games to seriously threaten New York. The Cubs have scored just five total runs in three games, a stark contrast from their National League Division Series when they scored at least six runs in three of the four games. The Cubs managed to hit two home runs in Game 3, but both were solo shots.
Now, facing elimination, the Cubs will turn to Jason Hammel to start Game 4. Hammel was initially penciled in as the starter, although there was some thought Chicago might start Jon Lester on short rest if they went down 0-3. Barring a late change, that doesn’t appear to be the case. Hammel started Game 4 of the Cubs’ NLDS series, but lasted only three innings. He gave up three runs on three hits while walking three more batters. He pitched very well in his only outing against the Mets this season, allowing one run over eight innings on May 13.
New York will counter with 24-year-old Steven Matz. He will make just his eighth MLB start, including the playoffs. He allowed three runs over five innings against the Dodgers in the NLDS, but was very effective pitching down the stretch for the Mets in the regular season. He’s working on plenty of rest, having not pitched since Oct. 13. He did not face the Cubs during the regular season.
The two teams will again meet in the late game, with first pitch in Chicago not scheduled until 8:07 p.m. ET. TBS will once again have the broadcast coverage and also provide online coverage via their mobile app. Subscribers to MLB.TV’s postseason package can also stream the game live.
