David Price is developing a reputation as a pitcher who has issues in the postseason. That rep could very well be unfair -- Grant Brisbee already went into detail with earlier in the playoffs -- as there is a lot of noise being made about very few innings for a pitcher who is outstanding. Like with Clayton Kershaw pitching the Dodgers to a Game 5 last round, though, Price has a chance to try to stem some of the pessimism and negativity by helping the Jays to a Game 7 with his performance on Friday.
This is easily David Price’s most important start as a Blue Jay, but it’s really the most important start he’s made in any uniform. Price was in the bullpen during the Rays’ World Series run in 2008. The Rays never again made it past the ALDS with Price around, and when he was dealt to the Tigers last summer, they were swept by the Orioles in the same round -- through no fault of the lefty’s, who spun eight innings of two-run ball against Baltimore, but took the loss anyway.
An effort like that, except with the Blue Jays winning, would go a long way toward correcting the perception of Price as a regular season pitcher. It would give us our first -- and maybe only -- Game 7 of the 2015 playoffs, and get Marcus Stroman in yet another decisive contest. It would also give us all something to watch on Saturday night -- the World Series doesn’t start until Tuesday regardless of the outcome of Game 6. Standing in the way of more baseball is Yordano Ventura and the Royals, who can end all of the “what ifs” with a single victory on Friday.
- Don't fret, Cubs fans: your team will be back, unless it won't be, because baseball is cruel and hates all of you. Hey, it hates all of us, this isn't some North Side exclusive thing.
- Obviously, winning the World Series was the 2015 goal, but there is a bright side to losing now: the Cubs can now tell their own story in 2016 and beyond.
- The Dodgers parted ways with manager Don Mattingly, after yet another abrupt playoff run. Who is going to succeed him in Los Angeles?
- The Red Sox and manager John Farrell got some wonderful news, as they learned that he is in remission.
- MLB wants to stop players from spraying fans with champagne. In their defense, the rules already do say that alcohol isn't allowed outside the clubhouse, and there are kids in the stands.
- Three-person broadcast teams are just one person too many. Any wrestling fan could have told you this, but listening to Cal Ripken and Harold Reynolds interrupt silence with inanity has only driven it home in baseball.
- Al Yellon has some other issues with the way TBS specifically handles their baseball coverage.
- Roger Clemens and Oil Can Boyd, whose most famous connection is as teammates on the 1986 Red Sox, pitched against each other this week in the Men's Senior League.
- The New York Times ran an article on the Cubs' loss to the Mets, except written in the language of 1908.
- Will the Cubs go big and outbid the Cardinals for Jason Heyward this offseason?
- The Phillies' search for a new general manager appears to be coming to a close.
- The Toronto Sun doesn't seem to understand how the League Championship Series actually works.
