Less than an hour before Edinson Volquez took the mound to start Game 1 of the World Series, news broke that Volquez’s father Danio had died. The Royals told FOX that Volquez did not know about his father’s passing during the game. According to the team, Volquez’s wife requested he not be told.
Edinson Volquez’s father died prior to Volquez starting Game 1 of the World Series

Hector Gomez was the first to report the news and initially there were conflicting reports on whether Volquez knew prior to the game. Enrique Rojas of ESPN reported Volquez learned of his father's passing on his way to the stadium. The Associated Press also reported that Volquez was aware of the news prior to the game. The Royals contradicted those reports, first saying Volquez was not aware during the game and later adding that his wife requested he not be told until after he left the game, at which point he joined his family.
Amidst significant confusion and with the television broadcast likely playing in the Royals’ clubhouse, FOX opted not to discuss the situation while Volquez was in the game. It did not report the statement from the team until after Volquez had been removed. Volquez allowed three runs on six hits over six innings before coming out of the game. FOX reported on the situation prior to the eighth inning.
The Associated Press reported Danio Volquez died from heart failure. He was 63 years old.
