Three games were cancelled Friday evening while Hurricane Joaquin swept toward the East Coast, forcing an already busy weekend into overdrive. On Saturday, the Yankees and Orioles, Mets and Nationals and Marlins and Phillies will play doubleheaders to make up some lost time and determine home field advantage for two upcoming playoff rounds. If Hurricane Joaquin lingers through next week, there could be serious implications for the start of the postseason as well.
The Yankees and the Mets secured their postseason berths earlier this week, but both teams still have the opportunity to earn homefield advantage. The Yankees need just one more win to host the AL Wild Card game in New York, while the Mets are hunting for an edge in their NLDS matchup against the Dodgers on Oct. 9. The Mets might have this one in the bag -- especially with Matt Harvey on the mound -- but they’ll find a capable adversary in the Nationals’ Max Scherzer. The Yankees, meanwhile, will put their faith in Ivan Nova to see them through an early start at Camden Yards.
Thankfully for the teams involved, the most recent weather reports show Hurricane Joaquin veering away from the Atlantic Coast this weekend. However, the forecast still spells out a very wet week ahead, which could cause some scheduling snafus with the AL Wild Card playoff and the NLDS. More rain could delay the AL Wild Card game until Oct. 7, eliminating a travel day for the AL winner. And, unless the Dodgers play host to the NLDS in drought-ridden California, MLB will have to engineer a way to keep the postseason on track while the Mets mop up Citi Field.
- The stakes are equally high over in Arlington, Texas, where the Rangers continue to battle for the AL West title. One win could launch them into the ALDS, where Adam Morris has some ideas about their potential postseason roster.
