Now this is a World Series worth watching. The Mets got back into the race for the Commissioner’s Trophy on Friday night, in a game that flip-flopped three times before settling in the Mets’ favor, 9-3. Rookie starter and Asgardian deity Noah Syndergaard got off to a rough start, but settled down to strike out six batters while the Mets orchestrated an explosive, four-run rally in the sixth inning.
On Saturday, the Royals will send out right-handed veteran and former Met Chris Young, who shut down the Mets in three innings back in Game 1, though his 53-pitch count doesn’t seem to affect manager Ned Yost’s lineup card. In fact, the only pitch count that matters is that of Matt Harvey, who tossed 80 pitches in Game 1 and is not eligible to start Game 4 as planned. Instead, the Mets selected rookie Steven Matz, a dynamite lefty who last pitched the Mets to an 8-3 win in Game 4 of the NLCS.
Since the Mets no longer face elimination in Game 4, they’ll have the opportunity to gain an edge on the Royals in New York City. Games 4 and 5 will be played at Citi Field, which, if it reaches record sellout numbers again, will provide a supportive atmosphere for the home team. Although the odds of a 2-1 lead evaporating in Game 4 are slim, the Royals lost their nerve against the San Francisco Giants in Game 4 of the 2014 World Series -- and will try not to repeat their mistakes this time around.
