The Texas Rangers captured the first game of their American League Division Series against the Toronto Blue Jays with a 5-3 victory in Game 1 on Thursday. Now Texas looks for a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series with Cole Hamels on the mound in Game 2 on Friday afternoon at Rogers Centre.

Hamels, who struck out eight in a complete game win over the Los Angeles Angels on the final day of the regular season on Sunday, is 7-4 with a 3.09 ERA in 13 career postseason starts. Those were all with Philadelphia, from where he was acquired by Texas in July.

“I think the postseason’s where it’s at,” Hamels said on Thursday. “This is what we trained for. These are the moments that I enjoy the most, so I think in order to get here you do have to have a sense of focus. But then when you’re here, you try to lay it all out on the line because sometimes you don’t get that second chance.”

Toronto will counter with Marcus Stroman, who missed the first five and half months of the season with a torn ACL in his left knee. But the right-hander was lights out down the stretch for the Blue Jays, going 4-0 with a 1.67 ERA in four starts in September, with 18 strikeouts and six walks in 27 innings.

He allowed just two total runs in 22 innings over his final three starts.

“I didn’t necessarily know that it would play out like it has played out,” Stroman said on Thursday. “But in the back of my head through all those workouts while I was in class, (the goal) was to get back because I knew the team that we had was extremely special and we would be able to go pretty deep into the playoffs. So I made it a point of emphasis to get back to this team to be a part of something special.

“The fact that they were picking up new guys and winning all these guys, that only made me more motivated and hungry to get back. I’m just excited to be back and I cannot wait to get out there on the mound tomorrow.”

MLB Network will televise Game 2 at 12:45 p.m. ET, with Bob Costas on play-by-play, alongside analysts Harold Reynolds and Jim Kaat and reporter Ken Rosenthal.

The game, with alternate camera angles, will be available online via Postseason.tv.
