Starting pitching is the name of the game on Friday night, with Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers hosting Jacob deGrom and the New York Mets in Game 1 of the National League Division Series at Dodger Stadium.

Kershaw has won three of the last four NL Cy Young Awards, and followed that up with a 2.13 ERA in 232 2/3 innings and 301 strikeouts, the first pitcher in 13 years to reach the 300 plateau.
But deGrom is no slouch in his own right. An All-Star like Kershaw in 2015, the Mets right-hander put up a 2.54 ERA in 30 starts this season with 205 strikeouts and 191 innings.
“He’s one of the best pitchers in the game if not the best,” deGrom said of Kershaw. “The way he takes the mound, he goes out there and attacks hitters. I think I try to do the same thing, not get intimidated by anybody who steps in the box and go out there and make your pitches when you need to.”
deGrom struck out eight in 7 2/3 innings against the Dodgers on July 26, and Kershaw allowed one run in 16 total innings in his two starts against New York. In other words, expect runs to be at a premium on Friday night.
