After a wild win on Halloween night, the Royals find themselves one victory away from taking home the Commissioner’s Trophy. It was a typical Kansas City win in Game 4, as they came from behind once again with a late-inning rally. They did what they’ve done all season — really, the last two seasons — wait for a key mistake and pounce on it. In this case, the mistake was an error from Daniel Murphy, the NLCS hero. For what it’s worth, it wasn’t exactly a Bill Buckner play.
Now, the Royals have a chance to finish what they couldn’t last year in New York City tonight in Game Five. It’s been an incredible run for Kansas City, who was one of the worst teams in baseball for almost a decade before coming out of nowhere to win the pennant last year. After falling in seven games to the Giants last October, most expected the Royals to fall way back down to Earth. Now, they’re ready to shove it in all of their doubters’ faces with just one win.
They have one hell of a task ahead of them, though, as these are still the same Mets with the same dominant pitching. Matt Harvey didn’t have his best stuff in Game One, but he’s always capable of shutting a team down and will be taking the mound tonight. For the Royals, it will indeed be Edinson Volquez, still grieving the loss of his father. As someone with no rooting interest in the series, I’ll be pulling for the Mets tonight. I’m not ready for baseball to be over.
- There were some fireworks right off the bat in Game 3 that gave the media a fun narrative. Shocker: The narrative is dumb.
- It wasn’t all bad for the Mets on Saturday, as Michael Conforto launched two bombs.
- Some great news from the Tigers organization earlier this week, as Daniel Norris is officially cancer-free.
- Bryce Harper was awarded the NL Hank Aaron Award last night. Don’t expect that to be the only hardware he takes home this winter.
- The Marlins did another Marlins thing, and it’s amazing that anyone is still willing to work for Jeffrey Loria.
- Toronto let go of their manager after their best season in more than 20 years. As crazy as it sounds, it kind of makes sense.
- Now, the Blue Jays have a new front office to try their hand at a repeat performance. How much money will they have to spend?
- Should the Cardinals try a six-man rotation next year? Probably, because devil magic will make sure they have six aces.
- A two-time All Star from the late-90s and early-2000s is interviewing for a managerial position. In other news, we’re all getting old.
- The Dodgers spent a lot of money on Hector Olivera last winter, only to trade him to Atlanta a few months later. Now, the Braves will work him out at a new position.
- Billy Hamilton is one of the most exciting players in the game, but he still has a long way to go.
