Mets announcer Josh Lewin’s epic journey to call World Series, NFL games in same day

Game 5 of the World Series isn't only a big game for the New York Mets, who are down three games to one to the Kansas City Royals and need a victory to keep their season alive. Sunday night also marks the end of a marathon day of broadcasting for Mets radio announcer Josh Lewin, who will call two sports in two states on the same day.

Lewin has been calling major league games for two decades, having called games for the Orioles, Cubs, Tigers and Rangers before the Rochester native joined the Mets radio crew in 2012. But the multi-faceted announcer has also called hockey games as well as college football and college basketball in his career, and he is also the radio play-by-play announcer for the San Diego Chargers.

Earlier Sunday, Lewin called the Chargers’ 29-26 loss to the Ravens in Baltimore, then hopped on a private plane — at his own expense — to get to Citi Field in time for Game 5.

“This is epic. This is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure,” Lewin told Jared Diamond of the Wall Street Journal earlier this week. “It’s pricey. But it’s absolutely a day I’ll never forget, and I don’t want to miss it.”

The Chargers-Ravens game ended at roughly 4:13 p.m., and 10 minutes later Lewin began his roughly 200-mile journey.

Lewin arrived at Citi Field a little more than an hour before the 8:15 p.m. scheduled first pitch of Game 5.

That is one epic doubleheader. Kudos to Lewin on a long, exciting day.
