Former MLB pitcher Tommy Hanson dies at 29

Former MLB pitcher Tommy Hanson died on Monday. Hanson reportedly fell into a coma and suffered “catastrophic organ failure.” The Atlanta Braves report some of Hanson’s former teammates were near Hanson when he passed away at a hospital. He was 29 years old.

Hanson was hospitalized on Sunday morning after he had breathing trouble, according to a report from WSB-TV. He fell into a coma and suffered organ failure on Monday.

Hanson made his MLB debut in 2009 with Atlanta and spent five seasons in the majors. He was drafted by the Braves in the 22nd round of the 2005 MLB Draft. He made his minor league debut the following season and slowly began working his way up through the system. Following a strong 2008 minor league season, Baseball America ranked Hanson as the No. 4 prospect in all of baseball. He debuted in 2009 at 22 years old and turned in a solid rookie season, finishing third in National League Rookie of the Year voting.

He spent the first four years of his career with the Braves, posting a 3.61 ERA over 108 starts in Atlanta. He was traded to the Los Angeles Angels prior to the 2013 season and spent one year with the team. Injuries derailed his career. He signed with the Texas Rangers in 2014 but was released prior to the season. He spent 2014 and 2015 pitching in the minor leagues with the Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants.
