Marlins will host 2017 MLB All-Star Game, per report

The midsummer classic is headed to Miami for the first time.

The Miami Marlins will host the 2017 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald. An official announcement is reportedly expected sometime this week.

Miami has yet to host an All-Star Game but will finally get the opportunity after a couple of near misses over the years. Marlins Park was considered for the 2015 event, per Spencer, but was ultimately passed over in favor of Cincinnati. More than a decade earlier, the city had been awarded a midsummer classic but had it taken away by MLB following the Marlins’ post-1997 fire sale.

Along with Miami, Washington was in consideration to be awarded the 2017 event, according to Spencer. The Nationals, in their current non-Expos form, are one of only two teams, along with the Tampa Bay Rays, that have yet to host an All-Star Game. Of course, some teams have had to wait much longer than the Nats, who moved from Montreal after the 2004 season, and the 1998 expansion Rays.

The Los Angeles Dodgers, for instance, haven't hosted an All-Star Game in 35 years. Since then, several teams have hosted the event twice. Many of those have built new stadiums -- a condition under which former MLB commissioner Bud Selig delivered the promise of future All-Star Games -- over the last couple of decades.

The National League will host at least three consecutive All-Star Games. The festivities will be held at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati this year and Petco Park in San Diego in 2016.
