Hey, remember when Giancarlo Stanton was hit in the face by a Mike Fiers’ fastball last September, crushing his cheekbones and your appetite? He’s preparing to avoid a similar accident in the future, and will now wear a custom helmet designed to protect his face from errant heaters.
Giancarlo Stanton has a custom protective helmet for his face
This should keep his face from being smashed in by a fastball again.

It’s not super cool looking, as this image from the full Miami Herald story shows, but protective gear rarely is:
The one neat thing about the look, besides that Stanton’s face will now get to stay in one handsome piece, is that the protective portion of it has a “G” for “Giancarlo” inside. That was Stanton’s idea, as was the overall design of the guard, which apparently costs between $500 - $1,000 in its finished form.
It’s very different from Jason Heyward’s helmet guard -- one he wears for the same reason as Stanton -- since it’s a wire form:

If you’re wondering why Stanton went with the wire design, it’s made out of carbon steel and can withstand 100 mile per hour pitches. So, as long as Aroldis Chapman doesn’t hit him in the face, he should be good to go until even stronger metals are made into face guards.
