Josh Hamilton is going to be suspended for his alcohol and cocaine relapses, but that’s about all that is known of the situation at this point. A four-person panel failed to come up with an adequate suspension recommendation for Hamilton, so now his case will go before an arbitrator. New MLB commissioner Rob Manfred still has final say over the suspension, though, so even when the arbitrator comes to a decision, this won’t necessarily be over.
The problem is that, from a rules standpoint, Hamilton is a four-time offender who is in line to miss the entire 2015 season -- he was on the 40-man roster of the then-Devil Rays when he was previously suspended in 2004, so even though he was in the minors at the time, he was still treated as an MLB player. Another year-long suspension -- the punishment for a fourth offense -- would cost Hamilton his $23 million salary for the season.
Why is that a problem? MLB isn’t sure if they want to actually treat Hamilton like a four-time offender. This isn’t a PED case, or a minor-league player who took a bong hit or 10 a little too close to a random drug test. Hamilton has struggled for over a decade with addiction, and had been seemingly winning that struggle since his return to baseball with the Reds in 2007. He’s a person who needs help more than he is a player who deserves punishment, and Baseball is just trying to figure out how best they can hurt him on the field with the rules they themselves constructed with the players while helping him off of it. It’s a delicate situation, and they want to get it right, especially since the Players Association feels a suspension is merited but that it best come with Josh Hamilton, the person in mind, too.
It will take some time to sort out, and it’s not just Hamilton waiting to find out. The Angels, too, need to know what’s up with their outfielder and his salary so they can figure out how they’re going to replace him, and for how long. That, of course, is secondary to Hamilton’s well-being, but it’s all part of what has turned into a lengthy process.
- The Dodgers are willing to trade Andre Ethier, and Andre Ethier would like to be traded to an outfield that doesn’t have a half-dozen other options in it. None of that is new, but the Dodgers’ willingness to pay half of the $56 million still owed Ethier in order to trade him is.
- The Royals hit back-to-back-to-back homers in Wednesday’s spring training game against the Rangers, and since this is 2015 you can watch all three of them in this one GIF.
- The Mets referred to Noah Syndergaard’s lunch issue as the breaking of an unspoken rule, and since that’s just another way of saying “unwritten”, Unwritten Rules expert Grant Brisbee is on the case.
- If we all get together and vote as one, we can ensure that this minor-league team is called the “Yard Goats”. Let’s put our differences aside for this one, life-changing thing.
- Who are the players of the decade so far, and what will that list look like by the time 2020 rolls around?
- The pace of play clocks are here, and it’s only a matter of time before they become sentient and count down to a catastrophic, humanity-ruining event. If they count down to the unveiling of robot umpires, though, maybe things will be okay in the future. Or there will be more umpire arguments that end in death by robot. Whichever.
- The Diamondbacks unveiled a churro dog, and it’s glorious in its faux-dogness. If you’ve forgotten -- my stomach certainly has not -- the D-Backs are also the team responsible for the 18-inch fried corn dog stuffed with cheese and bacon.
- Remember the days of Ortiz and Ramirez back-to-back in the Red Sox lineup? Hanley is no Manny, but being Hanley is pretty great, too, and now he’s paired with Papi.
- The Mariners won their game against the Padres on Wednesday, and possibly lost a first baseman to injury in the process.
- The Braves are considering using 21-year-old second baseman Jose Peraza to start the year. Not everyone is enthused by this notion.
- Hunter Strickland is pitching in games again, which means Hunter Strickland is giving up homers.
- Joel Hanrahan needs a second Tommy John surgery and still hasn’t pitched since 2013. At this point it’s hard to believe he’s going to even attempt a comeback on the mound.
