Forgotten in all of the talk about where Cuban free agent Hector Olivera was going to play for the Dodgers, was where their previous Cuban free agent, Alex Guerrero, was going to play. Guerrero is up in the majors now after spending most of 2014 at Triple-A, and he is mashing: Guerrero has four homers in nine games and just 20 plate appearances, and is batting .474/.450/1.211. You would think this would make Dodgers’ manager Don Mattingly happy, but nope, he seems pretty cranky about potentially having another production option to turn to in times of need.
Speaking with reporters before Thursday’s game, Mattingly basically complained about how Guerrero’s success meant it could be harder for Justin Turner to get into the lineup, and “snapped” at the suggestion that Guerreo could be the starting third baseman going forward with the way he’s been hitting. He wants to focus on the long-term, which is fine and admirable, but come on, Don, is that supposed to include Turner? You’re not fooling anyone but yourself if you think Justin Turner is actually a guy who can reliably bat .340 for you again and again.
Guerrero’s ultimate role and production are up in the air, and he’s certainly not going to hit like this forever, or even for much longer, but he can play an important part in the Dodgers’ season. It is a bit funny, though -- and maybe it’s why Mattingly is so annoyed -- that after somewhat solving the outfield logjam, the Dodgers’ new bosses went and created an infield one. Too many good players is a good problem to have, unless you’re the guy who has to find playing time for them all.
- Yordano Ventura and the Royals were in the middle of yet another scuffle, this time at the start of a four-game series against the White Sox. That's three starts in a row the benches have cleared thanks to Ventura, who, by the way, was only pitching because he was fined instead of suspended for beaning Brett Lawrie last time out.
- Even Royals fans think Ventura's act is getting a bit old at this point.
- Joe Nathan needs Tommy John surgery and his 2015 is over, so let's reflect on his career just in case he doesn't make it back to pitch again.
- Major League Baseball will allow Pete Rose to participate in MLB All-Star Game festivities this year since the game is in Cincinnati. There is still no timetable on the decision to accept or deny Rose's request for reinstatement, though.
- The Mets are on top of the MLB world as of this writing, and these three moves are key reasons why.
- The Red Sox have a few of their top Triple-A prospects -- such as Deven Marrero -- learning other positions, except they are also blocked at those new positions. Is this a setup for a trade or two?
- Shelby Miller is with the Braves this year, and now he's trying something different to recapture the promise of his prospect days.
- Former big league infielder Julio Lugo has reportedly been charged with kidnapping and gun possession.
- Have you ever wondered what the relationship is, if any, between pitcher velocity and arm injuries?
- A kindergartner with a 3D-printed, Iron Man-inspired prosthetic hand threw out the first pitch at a minor league game.
- Take a moment, Rockies fans, and imagine a world where, instead of drafting Jon Gray with the third-overall pick in 2013, your front office had selected Kris Bryant.
- Tabitha Soren has been chronicling the famed A's Moneyball draft with photography for the last 13 years, and now you can see her work on display.
