The 2015 College World Series officially gets underway on Saturday with a pair of games from Bracket 1: Arkansas vs. Virginia and Florida vs. Miami. Arkansas-Virginia is the only initial matchup to feature two teams that didn’t host regionals. Both teams had to slog through the first round on the road, but both got fortunate enough to host supers in their home stadiums.

Arkansas-Virginia and Miami-Florida kicks off the the party in Omaha on Saturday.

It’s hard to say this first game is more important for one team than the other, but Arkansas’ pitching troubles truly make this a must-win for the Razorbacks. Injuries have knocked off their third and fourth starter, which means if the Hogs are going to make an improbable run into the national championship series, they need to do so in three games. A loss in either of their first two games knocks them into the losers bracket and ensures they’ll need to play five games to win the bracket.
While the first game features two teams that nobody really thought would be here, the second is a sexy matchup between national seeds. If you like offense, Florida-Miami is for you. Both teams rank in the top six nationally in hits and runs, and both have lineups bristling with .300 hitters. What’s more, neither club leans too heavily on the long ball, which means their offenses should still purr in the massive field at TD Ameritrade.
With that said, if anybody can find out whether the new baseballs can leave the yard in Omaha, it’s Florida freshman J.J. Schwarz, whose 19 homers are tied for most in the country.
