College World Series 2015 bracket and scores: Virginia, Florida win on Day 1

The first day of the 2015 College World Series featured the ACC and SEC splitting two games, with both Virginia and Florida winning their opening games on Saturday at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha.

The Hoos beat the Razorbacks 5-3 in the opening game on Saturday, with Florida drubbing Miami 15-3 in the nightcap. Daniel Pinero went 3-for-4 for Virginia with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, and he scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning on a double by cleanup hitter Kenny Towns. Second baseman Ernie Clement added an RBI single in the ninth inning for an insurance run.

Virginia closer Josh Sborz entered a tie game in the seventh and pitched the final three innings for the win. Sborz struck out five and allowed only one hit and one walk in his three scoreless frames, throwing 40 pitches.

Arkansas center fielder Andrew Benintendi, drafted No. 7 overall in the 2015 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox, went 1-for-2 with a home run, a walk, and two RBI in the defeat. The home run was his 20th of the season.

In the night game, Florida rallied in the fourth inning, parlaying eight singles, a double, two walks, a hit by pitch and two fielding errors into 11 runs against three Miami pitchers. Josh Tobias and Peter Alonso each drove in three runs for Florida, and Dalton Guthrie was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. That was more than enough run support for Gators starter Logan Shore, who struck out six in his five innings for the win.

Shortstop Brandon Lopez went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a walk in defeat for the Hurricanes.

Virginia and Florida move on in the winners’ side of the bracket and will face off on Monday night, while Arkansas and Miami will battle in an elimination game on Monday afternoon. Both Monday games will be televised by ESPN2.

Sunday’s action in Omaha will feature LSU and TCU at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN, followed by Cal State Fullerton and Vanderbilt at 8 p.m. on ESPN2.
