Vanderbilt probably didn’t mind seeing the skies above Omaha open up on Sunday night. With Cal State Fullerton leading 3-0 and Thomas Eshelman dominating on the mound, a lightning strike brought an abrupt pause in the sixth inning. An hour and half later, with rain coming down in sheets, the game was officially suspended until Monday.
College World Series 2015 bracket and scores: Cal State Fullerton-Vanderbilt suspended, TCU washes out LSU
The weather that was the only thing that could break up Thomas Eshelman’s gem against the defending champs, while the Horned Frogs brought a different type of downpour against LSU.

Play resumes at noon ET with Vandy batting in the bottom of the sixth with two outs, a man on third and Zander Wiel facing a full count. But the Titans won’t have Eshelman on the mound when that happens. The Fullerton ace was dominant though the first 5.2 frames, pounding the zone with pinpoint accuracy and fanning eight Commodores.
Rhett Wiseman was able to knock a double against Eshelman in the bottom of the sixth (one of just four Vandy hits on the night), and moved over to third on a passed ball on the last play before the weather delay. That gives the Commodores an immediate opportunity to jump back into the game on Monday.
We did manage to fit one game in on Sunday, though. And, man, was it a surprise.
TCU 10, LSU 3
This is one of the those games where you can argue whether one team won it or the other team blew it. On one hand, LSU played arguably its worst game of the year, matching a season-high four errors in an ugly 10-3 loss to drop into the losers bracket. On the hand, TCU was able to take advantage of those mistakes offensively, played superb defense and got an eight-inning gem from Preston Morrison, who picked up his long-overdue first career postseason win.
LSU came in fielding .977 on the season, 19th best in the country. But the Tigers defense was a mess on Sunday, beginning with starting pitcher Jared Poche, who, after plowing through the first nine batters he faced, cost himself two runs with a pair of throwing errors in the fourth inning. The first two hitters of the inning tapped easy come-backers to the mound, and both times Poche lofted overthrows to his first baseman. Both runners eventually came around to score.
It got worse in the fourth. Two walks helped load the bases, then third baseman Conner Hale booted an easy ground ball to make it 3-0. With the bases still loaded, Poche plunked the next batter to hand the Frogs another run. Then Connor Wanhanen knocked a two-RBI single back up the middle to officially break the game open.
The box score is going to say that only three of the Frogs’ 10 runs were unearned, but seven of their first eight runs reached base because of walks, hit by pitch or errors.
But give credit to TCU for taking full advantage of those free base runners -- the Frogs tallied five hits with runners in scoring position. And while LSU was bumbling around in the field, TCU was making plays like this:

— NCAA Baseball (@NCAACWS) June 14, 2015 There was certainly nothing lucky about the outing from Morrison, who gave up just one run on five hits through seven innings. The only runs the Tigers were able to plate came against Brian Howard in the eighth.
The cherry on top for TCU was a three-strikeout inning from Riley Ferrell in the ninth. The shutdown closer had been anything but so far this postseason, allowing seven runs and blowing two saves in his last 1.2 innings pitched. Finally having some success, even if its in the final inning of a blowout, should give Ferrell some much-need confidence and could get him back on track. If that happens, an already dominant bullpen becomes damn near invincible.
