The San Diego Padres announced Tuesday that Pat Murphy has been named the interim manager for the remainder of the 2015 season. The move comes a day after the team had relieved former manager Bud Black of his duties following a slow start to the year.
Pat Murphy named Padres’ interim manager for remainder of season
Murphy brings 30 years of managing experience to San Diego to replace former manager Bud Black.

Murphy, 56, was the manager of the Padres’ Triple-A Chihuahuas in El Paso, Texas, and has been with the organization since 2010. Originally hired by the Padres as an assistant to baseball operations in 2010, Murphy managed the team’s Northwest League affiliate from 2011-12, compiling a 93-47 record during that time.
“(Murphy’s) been managing for over 30 years,” Padres general manager A.J. Prellar said of the hiring. “He knows our players, been in our system, and around the group in spring training.”
The Milwaukee Brewers attempted to hire Murphy as a major league coach on Craig Counsell’s new staff after the team fired former manager Ron Roenicke. But while the hiring would have resulted in a promotion, the Padres refused to allow Murphy to leave, and in hindsight, it was a move that paid off well.
The Chihuahuas have a 31-33 record this season, and they finished 67-77 in 2014. Murphy’s managing experience includes 14 years as the head coach for Arizona State University before being forced out amid an NCAA investigation of the baseball program.
Murphy, cleared of wrongdoing, was only reprimanded for treating investigators with a “cavalier attitude.” During his tenure there, Murphy compiled a 629-284-1 record.
