As for what we're going to be doing in this space: The goal here will be to direct your attention toward some players who you might not otherwise consider. If you're here and reading this, then you already know that Mike Trout is really good. But when filling out a roster you can't just pick out stars. You'll blow your cap that way and get stuck praying to the baseball gods that a guy like Wilmer Flores actually gets a few hits. No, if you want to win, you have to take advantage of certain matchups -- and in order to do that you have to know where to look. That's what we're here for. Below are three players to target and three to avoid for June 19-21.
3 players to target
Kyle Hendricks, P, Cubs: Rare is it that you can find a pitcher in FanDuel who has a great matchup and will only cost you $6,800, but that's the deal with Hendricks Friday night. First, his stats: The right-handed Hendricks has a FIP of 3.45 this season and is striking out 7.8 batters per nine innings while walking just 1.8. He's surrendered just seven home runs in 68.2 innings. He'll also be facing the punchless Twins Friday night, who have a wOBA of .292 against right-handers, the third-worst mark in baseball, and are whiffing in 21 percent of their at bats against righties, the eighth highest number in the majors. All that for this price is something you should be looking to take advantage of.
Kyle Schwarber, OF, Cubs: Despite never playing above AA, The Cubs elected to call up their 2014 first round pick to serve as their designated hitter this week and Schwarber is rewarding them for the decision. He's collected six hits in his first 10 major league at bats and has a triple, a home run, four RBIs, five runs scored and a 1.700 OPS. Schwarber was batting .320/.438/.579 in 58 AA at bats this season so we know he can hit. He obviously won't continue to rake at this rate, but for $2,500, the price he's currently going at, you want to ride this hot streak.
Kolten Wong, 2B, Cardinals: A favorite of this space as his price ($2,900) continues to remain way below what it should be. This weekend against the Phillies Wong will be facing at least two right-handed pitchers (Phillippe Aumont and his 6.13 ERA on Friday, Aaron Harang on Saturday. Sunday's starter is yet to be announced.). This season Wong is hitting .297/.356/.486 against righties, and six of his seven home runs have come in those at-bats.
3 players to avoid
Garrett Richards, P, Angels: Richards will take the hill Sunday against the Athletics and while he's surrendered just two earned runs over his last two stats (14 innings) he should be avoided at all costs. The reason: the Oakland lineup, which has killed right-handed pitchers like Richards all season. Their .323 wOBA against them is the fifth highest mark in the league, while their 17.4 whiff rate is the fifth lowest.
Billy Hamilton, OF, Reds: He can fly, but getting on base has become a major problem for the second-year speedster. Hamilton this season is hitting a dismal .221/.265/.302. That he's been able to swipe a league-high 31 bases is a testament to just how fast he is. So why avoid him this weekend? Because even if he does, somehow, manage to get on base, he's going to be facing off against the gun of Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto. Realmuto has only allowed 16 stolen bases, the fifth lowest mark in baseball.
Bryce Harper, OF, Nationals: This is just about the hamstring strain he suffered Thursday night that knocked him out of the game. Harper will be further evaluated on Friday. He's not expected to miss much time, but you'd be safer avoiding him over the weekend, especially against an excellent run-prevention team like the Pirates. Harper is the face of the Nationals and their future. Don't expect them to rush him back onto the field.
Other notables
He may not be the hitter he once was, but Ryan Braun has 10 hits in 14 career at bats again Rockies pitcher Jorge De La Rosa, who he will face on Friday. Three of those hits have gone for home runs and four have been doubles. Oh, and the series will be taking place in Coors Field. ... Manny Machado continues to rake (six home runs, two stolen bases and a 1.189 OPS over the last two weeks) and he'll get to take on the weak Blue Jays pitching staff this weekend. ... It's A.J. Pollock's turn to tee off against the weak arm of Padres catcher Derek Norris. Norris has allowed 43 stolen bases this season, a league high. Making the matchup even better is that taking the mound for San Diego Saturday will be Tyson Ross, who's allowed a league-high 22 stolen bases. Pollock, who has 14 on the year, should be able to add to that total.
