College World Series 2015 bracket update: Virginia beats Florida 5-4, advances to finals

Virginia and Vanderbilt will meet in the College World Series finals for a second straight year.

Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

Third baseman Kenny Towns drove in three runs, including the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to give Virginia a 5-4 victory over Florida at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha on Saturday to advance to the 2015 College World Series finals.

Catcher Matt Thiass was 2-for-3 with a home run, his 10th of the year, and a walk, scoring two runs in the win for Virginia.

Towns also hit a two-run double in the fifth inning that gave Virginia a 4-3 advantage. But in the seventh he came up with the bases loaded, a situation in which he was quite productive this season.

Josh Sborz pitched four scoreless innings in relief for the win, his second in Omaha. In three games in this College World Series, Sborz has pitched nine scoreless frames with seven strikeouts, allowing four hits and two walks.

Left fielder Peter Bader and first baseman Peter Alonso homered in defeat for Florida.

Virginia will play defending champion Vanderbilt in a best-of-three series beginning Monday night on ESPN. Game 2 of the finals is Tuesday, and if necessary Game 3 is Wednesday, with all three games at 8 p.m. ET and all on ESPN.
